How to Get Relief from a Toothache
Having a toothache does not simply mean being in pain. It can also cause a disruption to your daily life or even your sleep.
But what exactly causes a toothache?
There is living tissue found inside each of your teeth. This living tissue is composed of veins, arteries, and nerves. It is this living tissue that gives your teeth the sensation of hot, cold, and pressure.
Now, as your mouth is constantly exposed to acid, the protective layer of your teeth known as enamel can erode, paving the way for bacteria to enter the innermost area of your teeth. This is known as the dentin, which is like a sponge. When bacteria get into this area, your body responds to these microorganisms in the form of an inflammation.
But unlike your other body parts which can expand and swell, the enamel of your teeth prevents these from swelling and expanding, which results in the pain that you may feel.
What can you do to get relief from a toothache?
If you are suffering from a toothache, the first thing that you need to do is to determine whether you need emergency care or not.
If the toothache persists for more than a day and if you have fever, swelling, and other signs of infection, or if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, you need to visit an emergency dentist or emergency room.
At home, your goal would be to control swelling. The best way to do that is to take Advil for three days, three times a day. Continue taking Advil even if the affected tooth no longer aches. You can also ask your dentist if you can take ibuprofen instead.
If you cannot take any of these medications, there are a few natural methods that you can try.
The simplest of these is the salt rinse. All you have to do is to stir salt in a glass of warm or hot water. Stir the water until the salt no longer dissolves. Use this solution for four to five times a day.
You can also use clove oil and apply a small amount using a cotton ball or swab on the affected tooth. Clove oil works best for teeth with exposed nerves.
It also helps to elevate your head as often as possible, especially during sleep. If you sleep in a position where your head is lower than your heart, the blood will come to your head and the swelling can worsen.
Finally, you can try applying a cold compress to the affected area.
It is important to note that medications do not eliminate the root of the problem. If you experience a toothache, you need to set an appointment with your dentist.
