How to Floss Like Your Dentist
You know you should be flossing every day. Your dentist near you has told you time and time again at every appointment. But let’s be honest, sometimes life gets in the way and flossing falls by the wayside. If you’re not sure how to correctly floss or what type of floss is best for you, read on for a quick guide on how to floss like your dentist.
Choose The Right Floss For You
The first step is to choose the right type of floss for you. If you have tight spaces between your teeth, opt for a thinner thread. If you have large gaps, go for a thicker thread. There are even special types of floss available for braces. Once you have the right type of floss, wind it around your middle fingers, leaving about an inch or two of slack.
How to Floss Properly
1. Start with about 18 inches of floss. Wrap most of the floss around each middle finger, leaving an inch or two of floss to work with.
2. Grip the floss tightly between your thumbs and index fingers. Slide the floss up and down against each tooth, using a gentle back-and-forth motion. Be careful not to snap the floss into gums.
3. When the floss reaches the gum line, curve it into a C shape around each tooth. Gently slide it into the space between the gum and tooth. Rinse the mouth with water after finishing.
Repeat this process on all of your teeth, using a clean section of floss as you move from tooth to tooth. Remember to be gentle! Once you’re finished, dispose of your used floss properly.
Flossing may seem like a chore, but it’s an important part of your oral hygiene routine. By taking just a few minutes out of your day to correctly floss, you can help prevent cavities and keep your smile healthy and bright. So next time you’re standing in front of the bathroom mirror with your toothbrush in hand, don’t forget to grab that piece of floss, too!
